PNW in Fall

Updated: Aug 31, 2022

The days are getting shorter which means fall is creeping it’s way back in. Time to start getting those fall bucket lists ready; we’ve got places to see and pumpkins to pluck. So here are some ideas to add to your list if you’re looking to enjoy fall in the PNW.

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Luckily, we have so many options to choose from here in the northwest so wether you’re looking to take a hay ride, pick pumpkins, do a corn maze, or do it all- I’ve got you covered!

First up is The Pumpkin Patch on Sauvie Island. This place is a fall lovers dream come true with everything you could possibly want when visiting a pumpkin patch. Not only do they have acres of pumpkins, they have free hay rides, a corn maze, sunflower fields, cow train rides, a cafe serving up delicious fall treats, a gift shop, a barn with animals, and a full market packed with all your fall essentials. This place does get pretty packed on the weekend-for good reason. But if you can get here early or come during the week it’s even more magical. I highly recommend the apple cider float and be sure to fill your cart with as many pumpkins as possible because the prices are amazing!

Next up is Bella Organic Farms. If you’re looking for a more low key option, farm to fork treats, and organic grown pumpkins this is the spot for you. Its located right next to The Patch so you could hit both places if you’re feeling extra festive. They are a smaller farm but still pack a big punch with a corn maze, cow train rides, and rubber duck races-my kids especially liked the duck races and you get to keep your duck. The pumpkins here are a little more expensive but still fairly reasonable.

Go Apple Picking

Like pumpkin patches there are tons of options for apple picking but today we’re going to focus on one in particular. Mountain View Orchards which is located on The Hood River Fruit Loop is nothing short of magical in the fall. They offer a pumpkin patch, apple and pear picking, as well as wine tasting-something for everyone. What made them our top pick was that they had no minimum on how much fruit you picked, admission is free, and you don’t need a reservation. While other places had a minimum of 10lbs of apples, which my family would’ve never been able to finish, Mountain View Orchards U-pick was pay by the pound which made it all the more fun as we got to choose several different types of pears and apples. They set you up with all the equipment you’ll need to pick the fruit and give you a wagon and boxes to load it into which makes the experience so effortless and enjoyable. And if you’re lucky you might get a peak of Mt. Hood who serves as the backdrop of this beautiful farm!

Shop Local

One of my favorite things to do during fall is check out small business around my city. Usually, they have much cooler merch and trinkets than your typical Target find and we love to shop small and support the people in our community. One of my all time favorites, Bloke PDX, can be found in Portland, hidden away in a spot where if you weren’t specifically looking you might just miss it-but trust me this place is worth finding! The owner is absolutely amazing and their shop all set up for fall is something truly inspiring. They offer dried wreaths, pumpkins in the fall, dried flower bouquets and garlands. I particularly love all the dried florals hanging from the ceiling of the workspace. And when you’re done grabbing some fall goodies you can head next door to the bagel shop for some delicious food to warm you up. And if you’re wanting one last summer hoorah be sure to check out Bloke’s Flower Church. The last one is happening September 3rd 9-1pm and it’s definitely an experience you won’t want to miss out on.

Do A Fall Foliage Drive

The northwest is known for its abundance of trees and there’s nothing better than taking a nice scenic drive to see some fall foliage. A few places I like to frequent in the fall are Moulton Falls, Cedar Creek Grist Mill, and the Yacolt area in general. There are so many places to see the fall colors just hop in your car and head for the hills and you’re sure to find some great places. After all, what’s life without a little adventure!
